Same as our French except for the hard to explain Germanic loans (all the ones that English also has are kept)

Re-etymologized words

  • souhaiter 'to wish' comes from swaid 'desire', a reflex of h₁su- 'well' + h₂eydʰ- 'to burn' + -os in an IE language with final stop devoicing (Thurish?)
