The Latin-based Vietnamese orthography, Cwốc-Ngữ, was developed by an Albionian missionary.
Tiếng Việt is written Tiếng Wiệt.
- Initial /v/ and medial /w/ = w
- Nguyễn = Ngwiễn
- Initial /w/ (underlyingly /ʔw/) = v
- /f tʰ kʰ~x/ = φ θ χ
- phở = φở, điện thoại = dyện-θwại
- s x = s sc (earlier sċ)
- xã hội = scã-hội
- nh ch gi = ni ti j
- đ d = d ð
- /i iə/ is always spelled y yê, not i ia/iê after n t d θ.
