Inherited from Gothic *𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌷𐍃 (*marhs). Cognate to English mare, German Mähre, Icelandic mar. The shift in definition was likely motivated by nearby Albanian magar, Romanian măgar, Bulgarian магаре (magare), and Serbo-Croatian магарац (magarac).
