			The modern name is the result of the rebracketing and misinterpretation of the older {{l\|fulf\|فٖلفَنَوثَتٖنَگ\|tr=fülfanawṯatünag}}, itself from Classical Fylfathic {{lang\|fulf\|فيُلفانآثاتيُنگا}} ({{lang\|fulf\|fülfanōṯatünga}}), a compound of {{lang\|fulf\|فيُلفانآثاس}} (fülfanōṯas), the genitive of {{lang\|fulf\|فيُلفانص}} (fülfanṣ; "Fylfan people"), and {{lang\|fulf\|تيُنگا}} (tünga; "tongue, language"). The modern form {{lang\|fulf\|فٖلفَنَوَث}} (fülfanawaṯ) can itself be analyzed as {{l\|fulf\|فٖلَف\|فٖلفَـ}} (fulfa-; "wolf") and {{l\|fulf\|ـنَوَث}} (-nawaṯ; "-ish, ic, -ian, -ese") through the further rebracketing of the term causing "-nawaṯ" to be taken as a suffix for forming language names.
