In all variants except Eastern Tarueb, lenis stops are voiced when following a short vowel and followed by another vowel, or whenever preceded by a nasal consonant. Fortis stops are aspirated word-initially. In Southern Tarueb, including Standard Tarueb, /t/ is fricativized to [s] word-finally, while /s/ itself merges with /ʃ/ to [ʃ] in the same position.<br/>/s z̥/ only contrast intervocalically and word-finally, where the former is written '''ss''' and the latter '''s'''.

In Eastern Tarueb, the fortis-lenis contrast is replaced by a voiceless-voiced one (e.g. ''kueli'' "road" St. [kʰyːlɪ], East. [kyə̯lə]; ''garl'' "tree" St. [g̊arl], East. [gærw]).

In most of Western Tarueb and a few Southern Tarueb dialects, the orthographical combinations '''ff''' and '''kch''' are affricates /pf kx/ instead of /f x/. The deaffrication process that other dialects underwent, however, is still ongoing, as observed among young Southern Tarueb speakers.
