Phonology

Modern Nurian has a typologically unusual distinction between dental and alveolar stops and between many types of fricatives:

  • t d = alveolar stops
  • th = alveolar spirants (slit fricatives, often pronounced as Welsh ll)
  • ŧ đ = dental stops
  • ŧh = dental spirants
  • s z = dental/alveolar sibilants
  • ṡ ż = postalvelar sibilants

Vowels: <a e i/y o u æ ie ea eo> /A e i o u æ y ea ø/ all with short and long counterparts

Consonants: <p ŧ t c ċ ķ k q b đ d dz ġ ģ g m n ņ ng hw f ŧh th s ṡ x w v z ż għ ħ ł l ļ ŗ r> /p t̪ ʈ ts tʂ c k ʡ b d̪ ɖ dz dʐ J g m n ñ ŋ hw f t̪ ʈʰ s S x w v z ʐ ʕ ħ h l̪ˠ l λ r ʀ/
