From Classical Phrygian ɜɑɯm (sjamch), from Proto-Semitic *śamš-. Cognate with Hebrew שֶׁמֶשׁ (shémesh), Akkadian 𒌓 (šamšum), Arabic شَمْس (šams), among others.
