From Classical Phrygian rɑɯɑ̄ү (tamān), from Proto-Semitic *ṯamāniy-. Cognate with Hebrew שְׁמוֹנָה (shmoná), Aramaic תְּמָנְיָא (təmānəyā), Arabic ثَمَانِيَة (ṯamāniya), among others.
