==Etymology== | |||
The modern name is the result of the rebracketing and misinterpretation of the older {{l|fulf|فٖلفَنَوثَتٖنَگ|tr=fülfanawṯatünag}}, itself from Classical Fylfathic {{lang|fulf|فيُلفانآثاتيُنگا}} ({{lang|fulf|fülfanōṯatünga}}), a compound of {{lang|fulf|فيُلفانآثاس}} (fülfanōṯas), the genitive of {{lang|fulf|فيُلفانص}} (fülfanṣ; "Fylfan people"), and {{lang|fulf|تيُنگا}} (tünga; "tongue, language"). The modern form {{lang|fulf|فٖلفَنَوَث}} (fülfanawaṯ) can itself be analyzed as {{l|fulf|فٖلَف|فٖلفَـ}} (fulfa-; "wolf") and {{l|fulf|ـنَوَث}} (-nawaṯ; "-ish, ic, -ian, -ese") through the further rebracketing of the term causing "-nawaṯ" to be taken as a suffix for forming language names. | |||
