Phonology

Modern Nurian has a typologically unusual distinction between dental and alveolar stops and between many types of fricatives:

  • t d = alveolar stops
  • th dh = alveolar spirants (slit fricatives)
  • þ đ = (unaspirated) dental stops
  • þh đh = dental spirants
  • s z = dental/alveolar sibilants
  • ṡ ż = postalvelar sibilants
