Tones
Æ has four register phonations or tones:
Spelling | Tone | Example | IPA | Meaning |
---|---|---|---|---|
unmarked | modal | hæ̊ | /hœ/ | echo |
s | stød (weak glottalization) | hæ̊s | /hœˀ/ | steep |
b | breathy | hæ̊b | /hœʱ/ | to stretch |
g | checked (strong glottalization) | hæ̊g | /hœʔ/ | to make a mistake |
Morphology
"Erhua" (pharyngealization) is sometimes used to nominalize verbs (from PLak *s) or form passives/intransitive verbs (from PLak *⟨r⟩) from transitive ones.
- hæ̊g /hœʔ/ = to lose one's way > hæ̊rg /hœˤʔ/ = mistake, error
- to /to/ = to see > tor /toˤ/ = to be visible, to appear
