From an older svagšdej, from Proto-Baltic *zvaig, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gwoizde, From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰweygʷ, *ǵʰwoygʷ (“shine; to shine”) from * ǵʰwey, *ǵʰey ("to shine") with an extra gʷ sound. Cognates include Lithuanian žvaigždė̃, Proto-Slavic (Old Church Slavonic звѣзда (zvězda), Russian, Bulgarian звезда (zvezdá), Belarusian звязда (zvjazdá), Ukrainian звізда (zvizdá), Czech hvězda, Polish gwiazda.
