Meiran (autoglossonym: Méir; Meiran : [veir]) is an experimental language I created in 2024. This language is a playground for some ideas I had, like consonant mutation and vowel "merging".

Phonology

Consonants

Meiran consonants can have 2 readings each, a "broad reading" and a "slender reading", depending on the vowel that follows it

Broad readings
Labial Coronal Dorsal
Nasals m /m/ n /n/
Plosives p /p/ t /t/, d /d/ k /k/
Fricatives f /θ/, v /ð/, s /s/, c /ʃ/ x /x/
Other w /w/ l /l/, r /r/ j /j/
Slender readings
Labial Coronal Dorsal
Nasals n /ɲ/
Plosives t /ts/ k /c/
Fricatives p /f/, m /v/ d /z/, f /ʃ/, v /ʒ/ c /ç/, j /ʝ/, s /ɣ/, x /h/
Other w /ʋ/ r /ɹ/ l /ʎ/

Vowels

Meiran has 12 vowels, and their orthography uses a lot of "vowel merging"

Monophthongs

Front Central Back
Close i/í /i/ ie /ɨ/, ue /ʉ/ u/ú/ou /u/
Mid é /e/, ea /ɛ/ e/o/eo /ə/ o/ó/oi /o/, oa /ɔ/
Open ai/ae /æ/ á /ä/ a/au /ɒ/

Notes:

  • The vowels in grey are slender vowels

Diphthongs

There are 4 diphthongs in Meiran :

  • ui /wi/ - Slender
  • io /jə/ - Slender
  • ei /jɛ/ - Slender
  • eu /jɔ/ - Broad

Grammar

Nouns

Meiran nouns are gendered, and can inflect for case and number

Genders

Nouns can be either Common or Neuter, which sets the inflection pattern of the noun Here are basic rules to deduce the gender :

Common

Nouns in the common gender often end with a broad vowel, or by a sonorant

Neuter

Nouns in the neuter gender ofter end with a slender vowel, or by an obstruant

Cases

Nouns can take one of 4 cases :

Nominative
The nominative case indicates the subject of a sentence, and the object of a predicate
Accusative
The accusative case indicates the direct object of a sentence
Dative
The dative case indicates the indirect object of a sentence
Prepositional
The dative case indicates the complement of a preposition

Numbers

Nouns can be inflected for the singular, dual and plural numbers
