Phrygian

Alternative forms

  • ɛʌɑ́‛ɜ (eláhsj)

Etymology

From a variant of ɛʌɑ‛ɜ (eláhsj) with unexplained invasive velarization, from Classical Phrygian ɛʌɑ̄ɑ̄̔q (elāhātʰ), from the plural of Proto-Semitic *ʔilāhat-, itself a derivation of Proto-Semitic *ʔil-, and thus related to Hebrew יָד (yád), Aramaic יְדָא (yəḏā), Arabic إِلٰه (ʾilāh), among others. Analyzable as Classical Phrygian ɛʌɑ̄‛ (elāh) + -ɑ́ɜ.

Pronunciation

    • (Smyrna Phrygian) IPA: [(ə)ˈɫ(ː)ɑːʃˠ]
