Vietnamese uses a Latin-based orthography, Gvốc-Ngữ, developed by an Albionian missionary.

Tiếng Việt is written Dyéng Wiẹd.

  • /v/ = w
    • sinh viên = sinj-wien 'college student'
  • /w/ = v
    • Nguyễn = Ngvyẽn
  • /b d ɣ p t k f tʰ kʰ~x/ = bb dd gg b d g p t c; finals -b -d -dj -c -m -n -nj -ng
    • phở = pở, điện thoại = ddyẹn-tvại 'phone'
  • s x = s sc (earlier )
    • xã hội = scã-hội
  • nh ch gi = nj/ni dj/di j (older ṅ, ḋ). /i iə/ is always spelled y ye, not i ie after n dd d t.
    • đi 'to go' = ddy
    • chó 'dog' = djó; chị 'older sister' = dị
    • 'what' =
    • nhiều 'many' is written nièu; *niều would be spelled nyèu.
  • d = ð
  • -nh -ch = -(i)ng -(i)c
  • c/k = always c; gh = always g; ng/ngh = always ng
  • tr = dr

Vowel spellings and tones are identical to our Vietnamese, except e â eo = ea e eao; iê ươ uô = ie ưe ue; final /w/ written as -u in our Vietnamese is written as -v instead.
