Etymology 1
From Old Brittainese grenn, grann and a multitude of dialectal variation, all with different meanings related to the face, especially that of facial hair. Usage in its modern sense first documented in the 17th century. Probably from a Celtic language, c.f. Welsh grann 'eyelid', Irish greann 'beard', French grenon, thought to come from Gaulish grenna 'beard, mustache'.
