From an Indo-European substrate language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European mel ("soft, weak, tender"). Cf. Romanian melc ("snail"), Welsh malwod ("snails"), Latin mollis ("soft"), Old Armenian մեղկ (mełk, “soft, weak”) + native wórm ("worm").

Folk etymology commonly analyses it as mílk ("milk") + wórm ("worm").
