Etymology

From Old Grekelin βασιλεύ, inherited from Byzantine Greek βασιλεύς (King, emperor), the imperial title of the Byzantine Emperor. The word itself can be traced all the way back into Mycenaean Greek 𐀣𐀯𐀩𐀄 (qa-si-re-u, "overlord, chief"), but further etymology cannot be found; Most likely either Pre-Greek or Anatolian (cf. Lydian 𐤡𐤠𐤯𐤯𐤬𐤳 (pattoš, “king”)). Doublet of vasilja.
