Etymology

From Late Latin tāliāre, a verb based on Latin tālea (“cutting taken from a plant”).

taljare (first-person singular present taljo, first-person singular perfect talje, past participle taljat, auxiliary habere)

  1. to cut, to slash
  2. (enology) to spike (to add a small amount of one substance to another)
  3. (mineralogy) to cleave (to break a single crystal such as a gemstone)
  4. to crop (a photo, etc.)
