Etymology

From Old High German zīt, Proto-West Germanic *tīdi, from PGmc *tīdiz. Cognate with English tide, German Zeit and Dutch tijd. This is one of many nouns who had the vowel *ī in their PGmc root that only properly exhibit the *ī > ui sound change in their plural forms.
