===Etymology===
===Etymology===
From Middle Skundavisk ''Skundaf'', ''Skundhaf'', from Old Skundavisk ''Skundehaf'', ''Skunduhaf'', ''Skunduhauē'', ''Skunduhabei'', from Halmisk ''Skundu Habai'', ''Skunduŕ Habai'', literally ''fast way to the sea'', from Proto-Germanic ''*skunduz'' + ''*habai'', dative of ''*habą''. Originally a compound word referring to the coastal area of Kijl, Skundaf came to be understood as a single word rather than a compound when ''skund'' fell out of use. It underwent a radical reduction through syncope in the Old Skundavisk time and fell out of use as a name of the region at the same time, replaced by ''Holtsat'', but had become the name of the whole kingdom of the Halms (in the form ''Skundafland'') as the Germanic tribes of the country were unified under Halmish rule in the 5th century.
