Etymology

From Old Pomorian aks, Proto-Balto-Slavic *ak- (*aks, *akins). Cognates include Old Prussian akīs (eyes), Lithuanian akis, Latvian acs, Proto-Slavic *oko (from earlier *akas). From Proto-Indo-European *h₃okʷ-, compare with Ancient Greek ὤψ (ṓps, “eye, face”), Latin oculus, Proto-Germanic *augô (from earlier *ago), Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi), Armenian ակն (akn) and and English eye.
