It is a fusional and templatic language utilizing consonantal (mainly triconsonantal) roots, with some agglutinative  characteristics. The language has been small but vigorous up until modern times, and has influenced the local dialects of other languages. Currently the language is suffering from decline in speakers and attrition of its many unique grammatical features. The latter is especially severe in Israel as the marginalized speakers assimilate more Israeli roots, vocabulary and syntax, and omit mutations as in spoken Israeli Hebrew.
