Some early modern Hetomic composers were involved in "Gothicism", for lack of a better term - it was a rebellion against the relatively optimistic aesthetic of the Classical and early Romantic periods. [The idea is "what Gothic literature would look like if it were a Talman classical music tradition"] Gothic music uses a lot of dissonant chords and blaring, raspy, sighing or murmuring timbres. Settings of horror literature are common.
