Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic قرمطي (qarmaṭiyy) or Persian قرمطی (qarmati), in reference to the Qarmatians. The adjective originally meant "berserk, barbarian, taking action without previous thought", which shifted to become "stupid, idiot", then used to describe people with neurological disorders, before being adopted as the official medical term for such.
