===Glottal reinforcement===
In Shalaian, glottal reinforcement (GR) is used both lexically and grammatically. Glottal reinforcement operates at a syllable level and affects the coda consonant(s) of that syllable as follows: When a syllable has GR, a glottal stop is used after the last vowel or resonant of the syllable. Almost any possible syllable can undergo glottal reinforcement.
Minimal pairs of glottal + stop final:
*''łaij'' = 'to play'
*''łai'ch'' = 'game'
Minimal pairs of glottal + fricative final:
*''whais'' = 'flesh'
*''whai's'' = 'to avoid him (honorific)'
Suffixes are added to a glottally reinforced word without changing the stem: for example, ''**xwín'a'' /ˈxʷɪnʔə/ could be a form of ''**xwin' '' /xʷɪnʔ/ but ''**xwí'na '' /ˈxʷɪʔnə/ would be a different word.
