In ancient times, this was the main character used to introduce direct quotations.  It was like a cross between "said" and a quotation mark.  Now, it is only used in classical writing, like old English texts that keep "The Lord spaketh unto" or some such.  It was also used for naming, or dubbing something with a name.

{{Ambox|type=content|issue=This character cannot stand alone in the language Dan'a'yo; it must be part of a name.  The meaning of the character is 'to say', and was used a lot in ancient texts.  Modern usage is just to say {{Ruby|{{C|言}}|언}}.}}
The modern replacement is {{Ruby|言|언}}.
