From Middle Nepokian itos, Old Nepokian xiktos, Proto-Nepokian xiktos, ultimately Proto-Indo-European *h₁oḱto- (“four”) , compare Sanskrit अष्ट (aṣṭa), Ancient Greek ὀκτώ (oktṓ), Tocharian B okt

Nepokian 'iko is the only Indo-European language which preserved the old root with its original meaning, all other descendants used the dual *h₁oḱtṓw for "eight".
