From Old Grekelin ψουμί (psōmí), from Medieval Greek ψωμίν (psōmíon), from earlier ψωμίον (psōmíon), from Ancient Greek ψωμός (psōmós), from the verb ψώω (psṓō), an alternative form of ψάω (psáō, “to touch lightly, to rub”). Cognate with Modern Greek ψωμί (psomí), Mariupol Greek псуми (psumi).
