From Middle Skundavisk ''seldsam'', alteration of earlier ''seldsien'', from Old Skundavisk ''seldasiuni'', from Halmisk ''ᛊᛖᛚᛞᚨᛊᛁᚢᚾᛁ'' (''seldasiuni''), ''ᛊᛖᛚᛞᚨᛊᛁᚢᚾᛁᛉ'' (''seldasiuniŕ''), from Proto-Germanic ''*seldasiuniz'', from unattested ''*seldaz'' (rare) + ''*siuniz'' (sight). The second element was reanalyzed as ''-sam'' due to analogy with adjectives like ''eensam'' or ''langsam'', because it was no longer recognizable by Middle Skundavisk speakers.
