Grekelin

Pronunciation (IPA)

  • IPA: (Standard Grekelin) /to.ˈro.go/, [to.ˈɾo.go]
  • IPA: (South Slavic Grekelin) [to.ˈɾo.go]

Etymology

Derived from Old Grekelin τρώγω (trogo), a colluquial and archaic variant of Medieval Greek τρώω, both from Ancient Greek τρώγω, possibly from the o-grade form of *treh₂ǵ- (“to nibble, munch”). If so, cognate with Old Armenian արածեմ (aracem, “to graze, pasture”), Tocharian B tresk- (“to chew”). Doublet of taraga (male goat).
