From Middle Skundavisk stad, from Old Skundavisk stad, from Halmisk stad, stadŕ, consonantal-stem variant of i-stem stadiŕ, from Proto-Germanic *stadiz. Doublet of sted, which was derived directly from the i-stem word and thus underwent i-umlaut.
