Sino-Khelvmish calque of Mandarin 同志 (tóngzhì), equivalent to ᕦᖖ (closeness, poetic) + ᐦᑐᐧᔅ (goal), both ultimately borrowed from Old Chinese 同 (*doːŋ) + 志 (*tjɯs).
