From Old Oypatha (tsááwà), from Proto-Cuyic *ksawos, borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *xšáyati. Eclipsed Old Oypatha ((h)wàŋ), borrowed from Middle Chinese (hjwang), which still survives in ᠺᠶᠠᠤᠠ (gya).
