Comes from Proto-North-Chlesamnic *ťéěj, which itself comes from Proto-Samoyedic *käəj. Which makes it cognate with Forest Nenets ше (šye), and more distantly with Eastern Khanty кӧԓ (köł) and Finnish Kieli
