The nasal vowels /ĩ ỹ ũ ẽ ø̃ ə̃ õ ɛ̃ œ̃ ã ɔ̃/ arose from historical V + /l/ sequences. In acrolectal accents, they are pharyngealized nasal vowels [ĩˤ ỹˤ ũˤ ẽˤ ø̃ˤ ʌ̃ˤ õˤ ɛ̃ˤ ɔ̃ˤ ãˤ]. In many accents nasal vowels may also be diphthongized (say, /ĩˤ ỹˤ ẽˤ ø̃ˤ ə̃ˤ ɛ̃ˤ ãˤ/ = [iw̃ yw̃ ew̃ øw̃ əw̃ ɛw̃ œw̃]). Some accents realize them as long vowels (with no nasalization). A handful of remote dialects pronounce them as pharyngealized vowels or vowels followed by [ɫ]. | |||
