Low Braskani (/brəˈskɑːni, ˈskæ/; endonym: Kuntini Ferkénaf [ˈkʰuːn.tʰɪˌni fɛɾˈkʰeː.nəf] or Ferkénix̮ini [fɛɾˈkʰeː.nɪˌɣi.nɪ]) is a dialect continuum of mutually intelligible registers of Vulgar Braskani. The divergent Ferix̮ini dialect may represent a sister language of Low Braskani rather than a constituent of the dialect continuum.
Phonology
Consonants
| Labial | Alveolar | Palatal/Velar | Glottal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nasal | m | n | ||
| Stop | pʰ p | tʰ t | kʰ k | |
| Fricative | f v | s z | x ɣ | h ɦ |
| Tap | ɾ |
The voiced fricatives /z/ and /ɣ/ have allophonic realisations as the approximants [j] and [w] in syllable-initial, non-intervocalic position. Word-finally, they devoice to [s] and [x]. This distribution of allophones suggests an alternative analysis of the consonant inventory of Low Braskani where [z] and [ɣ] are intervocalic and syllable-final (excluding word-finality) allophones of phonemes /j/ and /w/:
| Labial | Alveolar | Palatal/Velar | Glottal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nasal | m | n | ||
| Stop | pʰ p | tʰ t | kʰ k | |
| Fricative | f v | s | x | h ɦ |
| Liquid | ɾ | j w |
The unaspirated stops /p/, /t/, and /k/ are realised as [b], [d], and [g] intervocalically, and are unreleased word-finally.
