Proto-Coelo-Caric
Etymology
Noun
*sinɔ-s, *sinɔn
- one, single, (by extension) one's own nation
Descendants
- Old Silōs: sinōs
- Old Carichendan: *sineun
- Modern Carichendan: sin, eun (possibly, sin from syllabic apocope due to use as a proclitic, and eun from syllabic apheresis due to use as an enclitic; compare modern sin ranya "a book" versus ranya eun "one book"; proclitic use was likely an innovation to produce an indefinite article, through analogy with the placement of the demonstrative determiners, which ultimately yielded the definite article ra "the". The development might have been: *sineun-, *-sineun > *sin-, *-sineun (regular syncope of the reduct vowel) > *sin-, *-sin-eun (reanalysis of *sineun as containing *sin) > *sin-, *(-sin)-eun (*-sin not mandatory due to uniqueness of *-eun) > sin, eun. Alternatively, there could have been a distinction between weak forms and strong forms of function words once Carichendan prosodic stress developed, yielding *sin as a weak form of *sineun, where the reduct vowel was preserved in the strong form, allowing for another scenario of reanalysis of *sineun as containing *sin)
