Knench/Old
< Knench
Old Knench is defined as the stage of Knench after the Knench stress shift (the shift from ~fixed ultimate stress to fixed penultimate stress). This stage must be reconstructed, as Knench is sparsely attested until the 11th century (the beginning of Middle Knench).
Phonology
Knench New Quantity System
Shift to penult stress; vowels lengthen in stressed syllables or monosyllables, phonemicizing vowel quality.
Gemination is lost at this point, with the information transferring to the preceding vowel: *farrṓ 'cow' -> faro /ˈfaːɾʌ/
