From Balkan substrate vocabulary, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European mel ("soft", "weak", "tender"). Cf. Welsh malwod ("snails"), Latin mollis ("soft"), Old Armenian մեղկ (mełk, “soft, weak”) + native wórm ("worm").
Folk etymology commonly analyses it as mílk ("milk") + wórm ("worm").
