Grekelin

Pronunciation (IPA)

  • IPA: (Standard Grekelin) /vas.ˈleu̯/, [vɑs.ˈɫɛv]
  • IPA: (South Slavic Grekelin) [vas.ˈɫev]
  • IPA: (North Slavic Grekelin) [vɑs.ˈlef]

Etymology

From Old Grekelin βασιλεύ, inherited from Byzantine Greek βασιλεύς (King, emperor), the imperial title of the Byzantine Emperor. The word itself can be traced all the way back into Mycenaean Greek 𐀣𐀯𐀩𐀄 (qa-si-re-u, "overlord, chief"), but further etymology cannot be found; Most likely either Pre-Greek or Anatolian (cf. Lydian 𐤡𐤠𐤯𐤯𐤬𐤳 (pattoš, “king”)). Doublet of vasilja.

Noun

  1. Monarch (Usually emperor but sometimes may be used for kings too)
To Vasleu Nikola II   (The Emperor Nicholas II)
  1. (Chess) The king
E stochi c'Szach enta a fogas to vasleu   (The aim in chess is to capture the king)
  1. (Obsolete, rare) Realm
NOTICE: It's important to note that the term Vasleu is analogous to English "realm" both in usage and rarity. It was mostly used in the middle ages, usually for feudal kingdoms. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 it became less and less frequent.
