Each individual in Burung belongs to a large tribe called a yenu 'tribe', led by a chief and under the patronage of a particular god, and a smaller clan group called an as 'clan', members of which claim matrilineal descent from a pair of common ancestors called the amasho 'great mother' and 'atasho 'great father'. A person then belongs to their closer family group, the angado 'family, kin'.

Terms for relatives vary according to age (both relative and absolute), gender and degree of relation. As a general rule of thumb, terms referring to relatives of the same or younger generation than 'ego' are not gendered, while those referring to older generations are.

Many ancient family terms have developed broader meanings and can be more closely defined by the use of the suffixes -be, -ba, referring to close blood relatives, -yo referring to more distant relatives and -ni referring to relatives by marriage.
