Contionary:obolia
Pomorian
Alternative forms
ābūļņa - in Eastern dialects
obūlia - in North-Western dialects
Etymology
From Old Pomorian ābāljā/ābūljā, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *āˀbōls (forms for apple and apple tree were differentiated in later stages of the proto-language); compare to Proto-Slavic *abolnь (earlier ābalnis), Old Prussian wābalni, Latvian ābele, Lithuanian obelis. From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ébl̥, *h₂ebōl, a word which some consider a borrowing from some pre-Indo-European language. The o/ū alterations between dialects are due to change in the declension pattern (and an analogical leveling as a result).
