Skundavisk

Etymology

From Middle Skundavisk -the, -þue, from Old Skundavisk -iþō, from Halmisk -iþō, from Proto-Germanic *-iþō.

Pronunciation

IPA: /θə/

Suffix

-the f. (genitive -the, plural -ther)

  1. -th (used to form nouns from adjectives)
    foul > fylthe
    foul > filth

Usage notes

The original /i/ vowel linking the adjective and the suffix caused umlaut of the main root-vowel. This umlaut was later applied through analogy to nouns that were formed after the fall of this /i/.
