Skundavisk
Etymology
From Middle Skundavisk -the, -þue, from Old Skundavisk -iþō, from Halmisk -ᛁᚦᛟ (-iþō), from Proto-Germanic *-iþō.
Pronunciation
- IPA: /θə/
Suffix
-þe f. (genitive -þe, plural -þer)
- -th (used to form nouns from adjectives)
- foul > fylþe
- foul > filth
- foul > fylþe
Usage notes
The main vowel of the adjective usually undergoes i-umlaut when the suffix is attached to it. This was originally due to the /i/ vowel of the Germanic suffix, but the umlaut continued to operate after the fall of this /i/ sound through analogy.
