  • IPA: /leoti/, [ɫɛˈɔtʲi]

Etymology

From Old Grekelin λεώθης (Leothes), of unknown origin. May be derived from Proto-Indo-European "*leykw-" (To leave), but no descendants have a similar meaning and there are many irregular sound changes.

Alternatively a borrowing of Persian لوتی (Rude, impolite), but the modern meaning seems to be hard to derive from and that borrowing hasn't occured in any other Greek dialects.
