From Middle Gothevian an, in, un (an, in, un; /ɨn/), from a merger and conflation of four Old Gothevian prepositions:
- an (an), inherited from Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰 (ana). Cognate to English on, Dutch aan, German an, Icelandic á.
- and (and), inherited from Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳 (and). Cognate to English an-, Dutch ont-, German ent-, Icelandic and-.
- in (in), inherited from Gothic 𐌹𐌽 (in). Cognate to English in, Dutch in, German in, Icelandic í.
- und (und), inherited from Gothic 𐌿𐌽𐌳 (und). Cognate to English until, Middle Dutch unt, German unz, Icelandic uns.
