Etymology

From Old Pomorian mūtī, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *māˀtē; cognates include Old Prussian mūti (from earlier *mātē), Sudovian mote, Lithuanian motė, Latvian māte, Proto-Slavic *mati (from earlier *mātī). The -ī ending is the result of an early vowel rising, which happened in Early Proto-Slavic and thus in Early Pomorian.

From Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr. Compare to Ancient Greek μήτηρ (mḗtēr), Latin mater, Persian مادر‏ (mādar), Sanskrit मातृ (mātṛ), Avestan 𐬨𐬁𐬙𐬀𐬭‏ (mātar), Old High German muoter and English mother.
