The shortening of the /a/ vowel during the late times of Old Skundavisk is irregular and explains why the modern form is not *tåken as it normally would be. This has also caused the verb to switch from the strong verb class 7 to the class 6 which is the usual class for verbs whose main vowel is a short /a/. However, typical class 7 preterit forms like tek can still be heard in some dialects.
