Pomorian
Alternative forms
saulna - in Southern and Eastern dialects. sulnika - in Central-Eastern dialects.
Etymology
From Old Pomorian sāulia + the suffix -n. Proto-Balto-Slavic *saul, *saulē. Cognates include Latvian saũle, Old Prussian saule, Proto-Slavic *sъlnь (*sъlnьce is a diminutive). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥ (compare Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios) (*sāwel-iyos), Old High German, Old Norse sunna). The origin of the suffix -n is uncertain, possibly from the word sāulinas - sunlike, solar.
